The first pillar professionals are using when it comes to promote functional training is « the multi-articular argument » . It means the prescribed exercises or actions involve more than one joint at a time. Logically, using more joints will need more muscles recruitment and depending on what is your goal, will increase your energetic expenditure or even muscle growth.
In the past years, Posturology showed us how we can optimize our health and performance by correcting little and major details on our posture.
Physiotherapist and sport therapist are working toward the same goal, to help rehabilitating people and getting back their physical integrity.
But what we forgot over the past years, is the basics : traditional bodybuilding a.k.a traditional isolation.
I remember telling to some trainers that some young crossfit athlete get injured because they never went through all the volume of bodybuilding we got before the CrossFit period. In the 90’s, beginning of the 00’s, there were no CrossFit Gym. You were going to hit the metal plates at the gym, and getting yourself jacked as much as you could, no mercy. That helped everyone starting CrossFit.And that’s bringing us to now.
How come we are not using these traditional exercises to help building our foundations, correcting muscle imbalances, reducing the impact while being in a deload week or starting a new cycle to set new super foundations?
Personally, some CrossFit athlete are in the game for now 5 years and more and they did probably more than 2000 ring muscle up, 5 000 pull ups and 10 000 squats. Just don’t make the math. Just realize that their body as cumulate a s**t ton of volume and intensity and that to get them better, for their health and long term performance you will probably have to find new (or old) strategies.
if someone has weak biceps, and has already done a lot of vertical or horizontal pulling strength, throw away your TRX, nothing is better than a traditional bicep curl. If someone has weak hand stand push-ups or strict press, and after evaluation it seems like one of his scapula isn’t working like the other, probably a traditional alternated dumbbell strict press will do the work.
